Humus Plus Organic Compost |
Preparation
Your plant must go into healthy soil to give it the best chance of success. A position rich in humus is ideal. If you feel your soil needs a helping hand you need to add some compost.
Example: For one 8" potted plant you would need a minimum of 15 litres of compost. (Approximately 1/2 bag)
Position
Some plants have special requirements regarding where they grow. It is most important that you follow the recommendations shown on the label.
If you are unsure don't be scared to ask for our help.

Manure
Many experienced gardeners recommend the use of animal manure's. This is a fantastic idea, but it should only be used in moderation.
You should NEVER use fresh manure as it will burn the plants roots. It is OK to use "old" manure that is no longer generating heat. Bagged manure's sold at nurseries are safe to use straight away.

Bare-root Plants |
These methods give the plants plenty of room to grow out into.
Staking
When purchasing stakes, remember to allow sufficient height in the stake so that it can be put in the ground far enough to support the plant.
Secure the plant to the stake with a soft wide tie. We recommend Jolly Tie as it is inexpensive and does a great job! For trees, we recommend to use multiple stakes. This allows some movement at the base of the trunk and thus increases the strength of the stem.
The plant will no longer need staking when it is mature enough to stand on its own.
Standardised plants such as roses will require staking throughout their life due to the weight in the head of the plant.
Back Filling
Gently firm down the soil with you HANDS - do not stomp it in as you will damage the root system.
Watering In
To reduce shock it is very important to thoroughly water in your plant. A good soak will also settle the soil and remove any air pockets. There are a range of products available to kick start your plants growth. There are Plant Starter, Charlie Carp, Maxi Crop Seaweed Concentrate and Seasol. Ask our staff for the product that best suits your requirements.
Pots
Because potted plants are isolated from the abundance of nutrients available in your back yard, it is important to only use a top quality potting mix for your potted plants. Potting mix is specially formulated to fill the requirements that a potted plant needs.
